With the increased popularity of broadband internet access, more and more home users are setting up home networks using 'Internet Connection Sharing' on the latest versions of the Microsoft Windows® operating systems. Unfortunately we have found that some home users experience problems in the set-up of this type of internet sharing system, and so we are happy to assist and offer our recommendations for a solution. Although Microsoft Windows® Internet Connection Sharing is useful in the short-term, we do not recommend it as a long-term method of sharing a broadband internet connection. With the advent of Microsoft's flagship operating system, Microsoft® Windows Vista™ and the appearance of Home Entertainment systems which are manageable over networks, the need for safe and secure communications and intrusion protection becomes ever more important. We therefore recommend the use of broadband routers which manage the internet connection and IP addresses without the detrimental effects on performance of the hosting computer with Internet Connection Sharing, and the need to have the hosting computer turned on to share the connection. These routers are available in both wired and wireless formats, and in many cases double up as hubs in the wired format and access points in the wireless formats. They also increase your security as they often operate as "pseudo-firewalls" as by default they do not allow unauthorised connections from the internet into your network.
